Director: Philippe Barcinski (Brazil) 2001

In a single day a man loses everything, and we watch it all backwards. Time’s arrow bent back the wrong way. This is compulsive viewing. Gained critics choice at Gramado Brazil, winner most innovative live action film at Aspen film festival.

Films with reverse or otherwise altered chronology have always fascinated me. The need to understand the sequence of events gives us a thrill that goes beyond basic cinema. Pulp Fiction and Memento are two other excellent films that come to mind and if you haven’t caught them already, you really should!

Speaking of Palindromes, I wonder if Palin’s δρóμος (dromos, or way/direction) leads to the White House in 2012. I certainly hope not! I’d rather have Tiny Fey in the White House, at least journalists and foreign politicians alike would have the right reasons to laugh.

the imaginarium of doctor parnassus

While browsing through Neil Gaiman’s online journal, I chanced upon a link to a teaser for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and was promptly blown away. It evoked the same sentiment of wonder that Mirrormask did, and is directed by Terry Gilliam, a director so infused with child-like enthusiasm that you just can’t wait to see it!

From Wikipedia:
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is an upcoming fantasy-adventure mystery film directed by Terry Gilliam and written by Gilliam and Charles McKeown. In the film, the leader of a traveling theater troupe, through a deal with the Devil, takes audience members through a magical mirror to explore their imaginations. Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits and Heath Ledger star in the film, though the death of Ledger midway through filming caused production to be temporarily suspended. Ledger’s role was recast with Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell portraying physically changed transformations of Ledger’s character as he travels through dimensions. The projected release date for this film is 2009.

Director: Jordan Feldman (France) 2003

A light snack of a film that makes you want to learn how to use chopsticks.

The lesser known version of Jordan Feldman manages to serve up something delightfully frivolous, a respite from the economic woes that plague us, especially as US congress has just rejected the US$700bn bail out of troubled financial institutions.

Who’s at fault, if anyone?
